{"identifier":"/us/usc/t12/s635i\u20138","title":12,"num":"\u00a7\u202f635i\u20138.","heading":"Special debt relief for poorest, most heavily indebted countries","text":"\u00a7\u202f635i\u20138.\nSpecial debt relief for poorest, most heavily indebted countries\n(a)\nDebt reduction authority\nThe President may reduce amounts of principal and interest owed by any eligible country to the Bank as a result of loans or guarantees made under this subchapter.\n(b)\nLimitations\n(1)\nTypes of debt reduction\nThe authority provided by subsection (a) may be exercised only to implement multilateral agreements to reduce the burden of official bilateral debt as set forth in the minutes of the so-called \u201cParis Club\u201d (also known as \u201cParis Club Agreed Minutes\u201d).\n(2)\nEligible countries\n(A)\n\u201cEligible country\u201d defined\nAs used in subsection (a), the term \u201celigible country\u201d means any country that\u2014\n(i) has excessively burdensome external debt;\n(ii) is eligible to borrow from the International Development Association; and\n(iii) is not eligible to borrow from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.\n(B)\nDeterminations\nSubject to subparagraph (A), the President may determine whether a country is an eligible country for purposes of subsection (a).\n(c)\nConditions\nThe authority provided by this section may be exercised only with respect to a country whose government\u2014\n(1) does not have an excessive level of military expenditures;\n(2) has not repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism;\n(3) is not failing to cooperate on international narcotics control matters;
