{"identifier":"/us/usc/t16/s1722","title":16,"num":"\u00a7\u202f1722.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f1722.\nDefinitions\nFor purposes of this subchapter:\n(1)\nAppropriate conservation project\nThe term \u201cappropriate conservation project\u201d means any project for the conservation, restoration, construction or rehabilitation of natural, cultural, historic, archaeological, recreational, or scenic resources.\n(2)\nCorps and Public Lands Corps\nThe terms \u201cCorps\u201d and \u201cPublic Lands Corps\u201d mean the Public Lands Corps established by\nsection 1723(a)(1) of this title\n(3)\nEligible service lands\nThe term \u201celigible service lands\u201d means public lands, Indian lands, and Hawaiian home lands.\n(4)\nHawaiian home lands\nThe term \u201cHawaiian home lands\u201d means all lands given the status of Hawaiian home lands under section 204 of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920 (\n42 Stat. 110\nMarch 18, 1959\nPublic Law 86\u20133\n73 Stat. 5\n(5)\nIndian\nThe term \u201cIndian\u201d means a person who\u2014\n(A) is a member of an Indian tribe; or\n(B) is a \u201cNative\u201d, as defined in section 3(b) of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (\n43 U.S.C. 1602(b)\n(6)\nIndian lands\nThe term \u201cIndian lands\u201d means\u2014\n(A) any Indian reservation;\n(B) any public domain Indian allotments;\n(C) any former Indian reservation in the State of Oklahoma;\n(D) any land held by incorporated Native groups, regional corporations, and village corporations under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act [\n43 U.S.C. 1601\n(E) any land held by dependent Indian communities within the borders of the United States whether within the original or subsequently acquired territory thereof, and whether within or without the limits of a State.\n(7)\nIndian tribe\nThe term \u201cIndian tribe\u201d means an Indian tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community, including any Native village, Regional Corporation, or Village Corporation, as defined in subsection (c), (g), or (j), respectively, of section 3 of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (\n43 U.S.C. 1602(c)\n(8)\nInstitution of higher education\n(A)\nIn general\nThe term \u201cinstitution of higher education\u201d has the meaning given the term in\nsection 1002 of title 20\n(B)\nExclusion\nThe term \u201cinstitution of higher education\u201d does not include\u2014\n(i) an institution described in\nsection 1001(b) of title 20\n(ii) an institution outside the United States, as described in\nsection 1002(a)(1)(C) of title 20\n(9)\nPriority project\nThe term \u201cpriority project\u201d means an appropriate conservation project conducted on eligible service lands to further 1 or more of the purposes of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 (\n(A) To reduce wildfire risk to a community, municipal water supply, or other at-risk Federal land.\n(B) To protect a watershed or address a threat to forest and rangeland health, including catastrophic wildfire.\n(C) To address the impact of insect or disease infestations or other damaging agents on forest and rangeland health.\n(D) To protect, restore, or enhance forest ecosystem components to\u2014\n(i) promote the recovery of threatened or endangered species;\n(ii) improve biological diversity; or\n(iii) enhance productivity and carbon sequestration.\n(E) To protect, restore, or enhance marine, estuarine, riverine, and coastal habitat ecosystem components\u2014\n(i) to promote the recovery of threatened species, endangered species, and managed fisheries;\n(ii) to restore fisheries, protected resources, and habitats impacted by oil and chemical spills and natural disasters; or\n(iii) to enhance the resilience of coastal ecosystems, communities, and economies through habitat conservation.\n(10)\nPublic lands\nThe term \u201cpublic lands\u201d means any lands or waters (or interest therein) owned or administered by the United States, except that such term does not include any Indian lands.\n(11)\nQualified youth or conservation corps\nThe term \u201cqualified youth or conservation corps\u201d means any program established by a State or local government, by the governing body of any Indian tribe, or by a nonprofit organization that\u2014\n(A) is capable of offering meaningful, full-time, productive work for individuals between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger in a natural or cultural resource setting;\n(B) gives participants a mix of work experience, basic and life skills, education, training, and support services; and\n(C) provides participants with the opportunity to develop citizenship values and skills through service to their community and the United States.\n(12)\nResource assistant\nThe term \u201cresource assistant\u201d means a resource assistant selected under\nsection 1725 of this title\n(13)\nSecretary\nThe term \u201cSecretary\u201d means\u2014\n(A) with respect to National Forest System land, the Secretary of Agriculture;\n(B) with respect to Indian lands, Hawaiian home lands, or land administered by the Department of the Interior, the Secretary of the Interior;
