{"identifier":"/us/usc/t16/s3502","title":16,"num":"\u00a7\u202f3502.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f3502.\nDefinitions\n(a)\nIn general\nFor purposes of this chapter:\n(1)\nCoastal barrier\nThe term \u201ccoastal barrier\u201d means\u2014\n(A) a depositional geologic feature (such as a bay barrier, tombolo, barrier spit, bluff, or barrier island) that\u2014\n(i) is subject to wave, tidal, and wind energies; and\n(ii) protects landward aquatic habitats from direct wave attack; and\n(B) all associated aquatic habitats including the adjacent wetlands, marshes, estuaries, inlets, and nearshore waters.\n(2)\nCommittees\nThe term \u201cCommittees\u201d means the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Environment and Public Works of the Senate.\n(3)\nFinancial assistance\n(A)\nIn general\nThe term \u201cfinancial assistance\u201d means any form of loan, grant, guaranty, insurance, payment, rebate, subsidy, or any other form of direct or indirect Federal assistance other than\u2014\n(i) deposit or account insurance for customers of banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions, or similar institutions;\n(ii) the purchase of mortgages or loans by the Government National Mortgage Association, the Federal National Mortgage Association, or the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation;\n(iii) assistance for environmental studies, planning, and assessments that are required incident to the issuance of permits or other authorizations under Federal law; and\n(iv) assistance pursuant to programs entirely unrelated to development, such as any Federal or federally assisted public assistance program or any Federal old-age survivors or disability insurance program.\n(B)\nFlood insurance\nThe term \u201cfinancial assistance\u201d includes flood insurance described in\nsection 4028 of title 42\n(4)\nGreat Lakes\nThe term \u201cGreat Lakes\u201d means Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior, to the extent that those lakes are subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.\n(5)\nOtherwise Protected Area\n(A)\nIn general\nThe term \u201cOtherwise Protected Area\u201d means any unit of the System that, at the time of designation, was predominantly composed of areas established under Federal, State, or local law, or held by a qualified organization, primarily for wildlife refuge, wildlife sanctuary, recreational, or natural resource conservation purposes.\n(B)\nQualified organization\nFor purposes of subparagraph (A), the term \u201cqualified organization\u201d has the meaning given the term in\nsection 170(h)(3) of title 26\n(6)\nSecretary\nThe term \u201cSecretary\u201d means the Secretary of the Interior.\n(7)\nSystem\nThe term \u201cSystem\u201d means the John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System established under\nsection 3503(a) of this title\n(8)\nSystem unit\nThe term \u201cSystem unit\u201d means any undeveloped coastal barrier, or combination of closely-related undeveloped coastal barriers, included within the John H.
