{"identifier":"/us/usc/t16/s470aaa","title":16,"num":"\u00a7\u202f470aaa.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f470aaa.\nDefinitions\nIn this chapter:\n(1)\nCasual collecting\nThe term \u201ccasual collecting\u201d means the collecting of a reasonable amount of common invertebrate and plant paleontological resources for non-commercial personal use, either by surface collection or the use of non-powered hand tools resulting in only negligible disturbance to the Earth\u2019s surface and other resources. As used in this paragraph, the terms \u201creasonable amount\u201d, \u201ccommon invertebrate and plant paleontological resources\u201d and \u201cnegligible disturbance\u201d shall be determined by the Secretary.\n(2)\nFederal land\nThe term \u201cFederal land\u201d means\u2014\n(A) land controlled or administered by the Secretary of the Interior, except Indian land; or\n(B) National Forest System land controlled or administered by the Secretary of Agriculture.\n(3)\nIndian Land\nThe term \u201cIndian Land\u201d means land of Indian tribes, or Indian individuals, which are either held in trust by the United States or subject to a restriction against alienation imposed by the United States.\n(4)\nPaleontological resource\nThe term \u201cpaleontological resource\u201d means any fossilized remains, traces, or imprints of organisms, preserved in or on the earth\u2019s crust, that are of paleontological interest and that provide information about the history of life on earth, except that the term does not include\u2014\n(A) any materials associated with an archaeological resource (as defined in\nsection 470bb(1) of this title\n1\n1 So in original.
