{"identifier":"/us/usc/t18/s31","title":18,"num":"\u00a7\u202f31.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f31.\nDefinitions\n(a)\nDefinitions.\u2014\nIn this chapter, the following definitions apply:\n(1)\nAircraft.\u2014\nThe term \u201caircraft\u201d means a civil, military, or public contrivance invented, used, or designed to navigate, fly, or travel in the air.\n(2)\nAviation quality.\u2014\nThe term \u201caviation quality\u201d, with respect to a part of an aircraft or space vehicle, means the quality of having been manufactured, constructed, produced, maintained, repaired, overhauled, rebuilt, reconditioned, or restored in conformity with applicable standards specified by law (including applicable regulations).\n(3)\nDestructive substance.\u2014\nThe term \u201cdestructive substance\u201d means an explosive substance, flammable material, infernal machine, or other chemical, mechanical, or radioactive device or matter of a combustible, contaminative, corrosive, or explosive nature.\n(4)\nIn flight.\u2014\nThe term \u201cin flight\u201d means\u2014\n(A) any time from the moment at which all the external doors of an aircraft are closed following embarkation until the moment when any such door is opened for disembarkation; and\n(B) in the case of a forced landing, until competent authorities take over the responsibility for the aircraft and the persons and property on board.\n(5)\nIn service.\u2014\nThe term \u201cin service\u201d means\u2014\n(A) any time from the beginning of preflight preparation of an aircraft by ground personnel or by the crew for a specific flight until 24 hours after any landing;
