{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/s7943","title":20,"num":"\u00a7\u202f7943.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f7943.\nDefinitions\nFor purposes of this subpart:\n(1)\nEconomic loss\nThe term \u201ceconomic loss\u201d means any pecuniary loss resulting from harm (including the loss of earnings or other benefits related to employment, medical expense loss, replacement services loss, loss due to death, burial costs, and loss of business or employment opportunities) to the extent recovery for such loss is allowed under applicable State law.\n(2)\nHarm\nThe term \u201charm\u201d includes physical, nonphysical, economic, and noneconomic losses.\n(3)\nNoneconomic loss\nThe term \u201cnoneconomic loss\u201d means loss for physical or emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, physical impairment, mental anguish, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of society or companionship, loss of consortium (other than loss of domestic service), hedonic damages, injury to reputation, or any other nonpecuniary loss of any kind or nature.\n(4)\nSchool\nThe term \u201cschool\u201d means a public or private kindergarten, a public or private elementary school or secondary school, or a home school.\n(5)\nState\nThe term \u201cState\u201d means each of the several States of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, any other territory or possession of the United States, or any political subdivision of any such State, territory, or possession.\n(6)\nTeacher\nThe term \u201cteacher\u201d means\u2014\n(A) a teacher, instructor, principal, or administrator;\n(B) another educational professional who works in a school;\n(C) a professional or nonprofessional employee who\u2014\n(i) works in a school;
