{"identifier":"/us/usc/t22/s8531","title":22,"num":"\u00a7\u202f8531.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f8531.\nDefinitions\nIn this subchapter:\n(1)\nEnergy sector of Iran\nThe term \u201cenergy sector of Iran\u201d refers to activities to develop petroleum or natural gas resources or nuclear power in Iran.\n(2)\nFinancial institution\nThe term \u201cfinancial institution\u201d has the meaning given that term in section 14 of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 (\nPublic Law 104\u2013172\n50 U.S.C. 1701\n(3)\nIran\nThe term \u201cIran\u201d includes the Government of Iran and any agency or instrumentality of Iran.\n(4)\nPerson\nThe term \u201cperson\u201d means\u2014\n(A) a natural person, corporation, company, business association, partnership, society, trust, or any other nongovernmental entity, organization, or group;\n(B) any governmental entity or instrumentality of a government, including a multilateral development institution (as defined in\nsection 262r(c)(3) of this title\n(C) any successor, subunit, parent entity, or subsidiary of, or any entity under common ownership or control with, any entity described in subparagraph (A) or (B).\n(5)\nState\nThe term \u201cState\u201d means each of the several States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, and any other territory or possession of the United States.\n(6)\nState or local government\nThe term \u201cState or local government\u201d includes\u2014\n(A) any State and any agency or instrumentality thereof;\n(B) any local government within a State, and any agency or instrumentality thereof;\n(C) any other governmental instrumentality of a State or locality;
