{"identifier":"/us/usc/t3/s401","title":3,"num":"\u00a7\u202f401.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f401.\nDefinitions\n(a)\nIn General.\u2014\nExcept as otherwise specifically provided in this chapter, as used in this chapter:\n(1)\nBoard.\u2014\nThe term \u201cBoard\u201d means the Merit Systems Protection Board under chapter 12 of title 5.\n(2)\nCovered employee.\u2014\nThe term \u201ccovered employee\u201d means any employee of an employing office.\n(3)\nEmployee.\u2014\nThe term \u201cemployee\u201d includes an applicant for employment and a former employee.\n(4)\nEmploying office.\u2014\nThe term \u201cemploying office\u201d means\u2014\n(A) each office, agency, or other component of the Executive Office of the President;\n(B) the Executive Residence at the White House; and\n(C) the official residence (temporary or otherwise) of the Vice President.\n(b)\nDefinitions Relating to Certain Matters.\u2014\nFor purposes of applying this chapter with respect to any practice or other matter\u2014\n(1) to which section 411 relates, the terms \u201cemploying office\u201d and \u201ccovered employee\u201d shall each be considered to have the meaning given to the term by such section;\n(2) to which section 412 relates, the term \u201ccovered employee\u201d means a covered employee described in section 412(a)(2)(B);\n(3) to which section 413 relates, the term \u201ccovered employee\u201d excludes interns and volunteers, as described in section 413(a)(2);
