{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/s10701","title":42,"num":"\u00a7\u202f10701.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f10701.\nDefinitions\nAs used in this chapter, the term\u2014\n(1) \u201cBoard\u201d means the Board of Directors of the Institute;\n(2) \u201cDirector\u201d means the Executive Director of the Institute;\n(3) \u201cGovernor\u201d means the Chief Executive Officer of a State;\n(4) \u201cInstitute\u201d means the State Justice Institute;\n(5) \u201crecipient\u201d means any grantee, contractor, or recipient of financial assistance under this chapter;\n(6) \u201cState\u201d means any State of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and any other territory or possession of the United States;\n(7) \u201cSupreme Court\u201d means the highest appellate court within a State unless, for the purposes of this chapter, a constitutionally or legislatively established judicial council acts in place of that court; and\n(8) \u201cdomestic violence\u201d means\u2014\n(A) any action that constitutes\u2014\n(i) attempting to cause or intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causing bodily injury or physical illness;\n(ii) rape, sexual assault, or causing involuntary deviate sexual intercourse;\n(iii) placing by physical menace another in fear of imminent serious bodily injury; or\n(iv) the infliction of false imprisonment;\nif such action is taken by one of 2 spouses, former spouses, or sexual or intimate partners against the other spouse, former spouse, or partner and the 2 of whom share biological parenthood of, have adopted, are legal custodians of, or are stepparents of a minor child;
