enhanced geothermal systems, the term \u201cengineered\u201d means designed to access subsurface heat, including stimulation and nonstimulation technologies to address one or more of the following issues:\n(A) Lack of effective permeability, porosity or open fracture connectivity within the heat reservoir.\n(B) Insufficient contained geofluid in the heat reservoir.\n(C) A low average geothermal gradient which necessitates deeper drilling, or the use of alternative heat sources or heat generation processes.\n(2)\nEligible entity\nThe term \u201celigible entity\u201d means any of the following entities:\n(A) An institution of higher education.\n(B) A National laboratory.\n(C) A Federal research agency.\n(D) A State research agency.\n(E) A nonprofit research organization.\n(F) An industrial entity.\n(G) A consortium of 2 or more entities described in subparagraphs (A) through (F).\n(3)\nEnhanced geothermal systems\nThe term \u201cenhanced geothermal systems\u201d means geothermal reservoir systems that are engineered, as opposed to occurring naturally.\n(4)\nGeofluid\nThe term \u201cgeofluid\u201d means any fluid used to extract thermal energy from the Earth which is transported to the surface for direct use or electric power generation, except that such term shall not include oil or natural gas.\n(5)\nGeopressured resources\nThe term \u201cgeopressured resources\u201d mean geothermal deposits found in sedimentary rocks under higher than normal pressure and saturated with gas or methane.\n(6)\nGeothermal\nThe term \u201cgeothermal\u201d refers to heat energy stored in the Earth\u2019s crust that can be accessed for direct use or electric power generation.\n(7)\nHydrothermal\nThe term \u201chydrothermal\u201d refers to naturally occurring subsurface reservoirs of hot water or steam.\n(8)\nSystems approach\nThe term \u201csystems approach\u201d means an approach to solving problems or designing systems that attempts to optimize the performance of the overall system, rather than a particular component of the
