{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/s284l","title":42,"num":"\u00a7\u202f284l.","heading":"Enhancement awards","text":"\u00a7\u202f284l.\nEnhancement awards\n(a)\nMentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Awards\n(1)\nGrants\n(A)\nIn general\nThe Director of the National Institutes of Health shall make grants (to be referred to as \u201cMentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Awards\u201d) to support individual careers in clinical research at general clinical research centers or at other institutions that have the infrastructure and resources deemed appropriate for conducting patient-oriented clinical research.\n(B)\nUse\nGrants under subparagraph (A) shall be used to support clinical investigators in the early phases of their independent careers by providing salary and such other support for a period of supervised study.\n(2)\nApplications\nAn application for a grant under this subsection shall be submitted by an individual scientist at such time as the Director may require.\n(b)\nMid-Career Investigator Awards in Patient-Oriented Research\n(1)\nGrants\n(A)\nIn general\nThe Director of the National Institutes of Health shall make grants (to be referred to as \u201cMid-Career Investigator Awards in Patient-Oriented Research\u201d) to support individual clinical research projects at general clinical research centers or at other institutions that have the infrastructure and resources deemed appropriate for conducting patient-oriented clinical research.\n(B)\nUse\nGrants under subparagraph (A) shall be used to provide support for mid-career level clinicians to allow such clinicians to devote time to clinical research and to act as mentors for beginning clinical investigators.\n(2)\nApplications\nAn application for a grant under this subsection shall be submitted by an individual scientist at such time as the Director requires.\n(c)\nGraduate Training in Clinical Investigation Award\n(1)\nIn general\nThe Director of the National Institutes of Health shall make grants (to be referred to as \u201cGraduate Training in Clinical Investigation Awards\u201d) to support individuals pursuing master\u2019s or doctoral degrees in clinical investigation.\n(2)\nApplications\nAn application for a grant under this subsection shall be submitted by an individual scientist at such time as the Director may require.\n(3)\nLimitations\nGrants under this subsection shall be for terms of 2 years or more and shall provide stipend, tuition, and institutional support for individual advanced degree programs in clinical investigation.\n(4)\nDefinition\nAs used in this subsection, the term \u201cadvanced degree programs in clinical investigation\u201d means programs that award a master\u2019s or Ph.D. degree in clinical investigation after 2 or more years of training in areas such as the following:\n(A) Analytical methods, biostatistics, and study design.\n(B) Principles of clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.\n(C) Clinical epidemiology.\n(D) Computer data management and medical informatics.\n(E) Ethical and regulatory issues.\n(F) Biomedical writing.\n(d)\nClinical Research Curriculum Awards\n(1)\nIn general\nThe Director of the National Institutes of Health shall make grants (to be referred to as \u201cClinical Research Curriculum Awards\u201d) to institutions for the development and support of programs of core curricula for training clinical investigators, including medical students. Such core curricula may include training in areas such as the following:\n(A) Analytical methods, biostatistics, and study design.\n(B) Principles of clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.\n(C) Clinical epidemiology.\n(D) Computer data management and medical informatics.\n(E) Ethical and regulatory issues.\n(F) Biomedical writing.\n(2)\nApplications\nAn application for a grant under this subsection shall be submitted by an individual institution or a consortium of institutions at such time as the Director may require. An institution may submit only one such application.\n(3)\nLimitations\nGrants under this subsection shall be for terms of up to 5 years and may be
