{"identifier":"/us/usc/t49/s24102","title":49,"num":"\u00a7\u202f24102.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f24102.\nDefinitions\nIn this part\u2014\n(1) \u201cauto-ferry transportation\u201d means intercity rail passenger transportation\u2014\n(A) of automobiles or recreational vehicles and their occupants; and\n(B) when space is available, of used unoccupied vehicles.\n(2) \u201ccommuter authority\u201d means a State, local, or regional entity established to provide, or make a contract providing for, commuter rail passenger transportation.\n(3) \u201ccommuter rail passenger transportation\u201d means short-haul rail passenger transportation in metropolitan and suburban areas usually having reduced fare, multiple-ride, and commuter tickets and morning and evening peak period operations.\n(4) \u201cintercity rail passenger transportation\u201d means rail passenger transportation, except commuter rail passenger transportation.\n(5) \u201clong-distance route\u201d means a route described in subparagraph (C) of paragraph (7).\n(6) \u201cNational Network\u201d includes long-distance routes and State-supported routes.\n(7) \u201cnational rail passenger transportation system\u201d means\u2014\n(A) the segment of the continuous Northeast Corridor railroad line between Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington, District of Columbia;\n(B) rail corridors that have been designated by the Secretary of Transportation as high-speed rail corridors (other than corridors described in subparagraph (A)), but only after regularly scheduled intercity service over a corridor has been established;\n(C) long-distance routes of more than 750 miles between endpoints operated by Amtrak as of the date of enactment of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008; and\n(D) short-distance corridors, or routes of not more than 750 miles between endpoints, operated by\u2014\n(i) Amtrak; or\n(ii) another rail carrier that receives funds under chapter 229.\n(8) \u201cNortheast Corridor\u201d means Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.\n(9) \u201crail carrier\u201d means a person, including a unit of State or local government, providing rail transportation for compensation.\n(10) \u201crate\u201d means a rate, fare, or charge for rail transportation.\n(11) \u201cregional transportation authority\u201d means an entity established to provide passenger transportation in a region.\n(12) \u201cstate-of-good-repair\u201d means a condition in which physical assets, both individually and as a system, are\u2014\n(A) performing at a level at least equal to that called for in their as-built or as-modified design specification during any period when the life cycle cost of maintaining the assets is lower than the cost of replacing them;
