{"identifier":"/us/usc/t49/s44801","title":49,"num":"\u00a7\u202f44801.","heading":"Definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f44801.\nDefinitions\nIn this chapter, the following definitions apply:\n(1)\nActively tethered unmanned aircraft system.\u2014\nThe term \u201cactively tethered unmanned aircraft system\u201d means an unmanned aircraft system in which the unmanned aircraft component\u2014\n(A) weighs 55 pounds or less, including payload but not including the tether;\n(B) is physically attached to a ground station with a taut, appropriately load-rated tether that provides continuous power to the unmanned aircraft and is unlikely to be separated from the unmanned aircraft;\n(C) is controlled and retrieved by such ground station through physical manipulation of the tether;\n(D) is able to maintain safe flight control in the event of a power or flight control failure during flight; and\n(E) is programmed to initiate a controlled landing in the event of a tether separation.\n(2)\nAppropriate committees of congress.\u2014\nThe term \u201cappropriate committees of Congress\u201d means the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation of the Senate and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of the House of Representatives.\n(3)\nArctic.\u2014\nThe term \u201cArctic\u201d means the United States zone of the Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, and Bering Sea north of the Aleutian chain.\n(4)\nCertificate of waiver;
