{"identifier":"/us/usc/t49/s80103","title":49,"num":"\u00a7\u202f80103.","heading":"Negotiable and nonnegotiable bills","text":"\u00a7\u202f80103.\nNegotiable and nonnegotiable bills\n(a)\nNegotiable Bills.\u2014\n(1) A bill of lading is negotiable if the bill\u2014\n(A) states that the goods are to be delivered to the order of a consignee; and\n(B) does not contain on its face an agreement with the shipper that the bill is not negotiable.\n(2) Inserting in a negotiable bill of lading the name of a person to be notified of the arrival of the goods\u2014\n(A) does not limit its negotiability; and\n(B) is not notice to the purchaser of the goods of a right the named person has to the goods.\n(b)\nNonnegotiable Bills.\u2014\n(1) A bill of lading is nonnegotiable if the bill states that the goods are to be delivered to a consignee. The indorsement of a nonnegotiable bill does not\u2014\n(A) make the bill negotiable; or\n(B) give the transferee any additional right.\n(2) A common carrier issuing a nonnegotiable bill of lading must put \u201cnonnegotiable\u201d or \u201cnot negotiable\u201d on the bill.
