{"identifier":"/us/usc/t7/s5801","title":7,"num":"\u00a7\u202f5801.","heading":"Purpose and definitions","text":"\u00a7\u202f5801.\nPurpose and definitions\n(a)\nPurpose\nIt is the purpose of this subchapter to encourage research designed to increase our knowledge concerning agricultural production systems that\u2014\n(1) maintain and enhance the quality and productivity of the soil;\n(2) conserve soil, water, energy, natural resources, and fish and wildlife habitat;\n(3) maintain and enhance the quality of surface and ground water;\n(4) protect the health and safety of persons involved in the food and farm system;\n(5) promote the well being of animals; and\n(6) increase employment opportunities in agriculture.\n(b)\nDefinitions\nFor purposes of this subchapter:\n(1) The term \u201csustainable agriculture\u201d shall have the same meaning given to that term by\nsection 3103 of this title\n(2) The term \u201cintegrated crop management\u201d means an agricultural management system that integrates all controllable agricultural production factors for long-term sustained productivity, profitability, and ecological soundness.\n(3) The term \u201cintegrated resource management\u201d means livestock management which utilizes an interdisciplinary systems approach which integrates all controllable agricultural production practices to provide long-term sustained productivity and profitable production of safe and wholesome food in an environmentally sound manner.\n(4) The term \u201cagribusiness\u201d includes a producer or organization engaged in an agricultural enterprise with a profit motive.\n(5) The term \u201cextension\u201d shall have the same meaning given to that term by\nsection 3103 of this title\n(6) The term \u201cSecretary\u201d means the Secretary of Agriculture.\n(7) The term \u201cState\u201d means each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands of the United States, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, or federally recognized Indian tribes.\n(8) The term \u201cState agricultural experiment stations\u201d shall have the same meaning given to that term by\nsection 3103 of this title\n(9) The term \u201cnonprofit organization\u201d means an organization, group, institute, or institution that\u2014\n(A) has a demonstrated capacity to conduct agricultural research or education programs;\n(B) has experience in research, demonstration, education, or extension in sustainable agricultural practices and systems;
