{"identifier":"/us/usc/t7/s918c","title":7,"num":"\u00a7\u202f918c.","heading":"Rural and remote communities electrification grants","text":"\u00a7\u202f918c.\nRural and remote communities electrification grants\n(a)\nDefinitions\nIn this section:\n(1) The term \u201celigible grantee\u201d means a local government or municipality, peoples\u2019 utility district, irrigation district, and cooperative, nonprofit, or limited-dividend association in a rural area.\n(2) The term \u201cincremental hydropower\u201d means additional generation achieved from increased efficiency after\nJanuary 1, 2005\nJanuary 1, 2005\n(3) The term \u201crenewable energy\u201d means electricity generated from\u2014\n(A) a renewable energy source; or\n(B) hydrogen, other than hydrogen produced from a fossil fuel, that is produced from a renewable energy source.\n(4) The term \u201crenewable energy source\u201d means\u2014\n(A) wind;\n(B) ocean waves;\n(C) biomass;\n(D) solar;\n(E) landfill gas;\n(F) incremental hydropower;\n(G) livestock methane; or\n(H) geothermal energy.\n(5) The term \u201crural area\u201d means a city, town, or unincorporated area that has a population of not more than 10,000 inhabitants.\n(b)\nGrants\nThe Secretary, in consultation with the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of the Interior, may provide grants under this section to eligible grantees for the purpose of\u2014\n(1) increasing energy efficiency, siting or upgrading transmission and distribution lines serving rural areas;
